Crypto to power porn payroll after PayPal pulls payments for performers?

PayPal’s abrupt decision will affect around 100,000 Pornhub professionals.

On Wednesday this week, online payments giant PayPal announced it would cease to allow payments for Pornhub performers. Possibly due to restrictions on payments for ‘sexually oriented materials or services’, the company stated that ‘Pornhub has made certain business payments through PayPal without seeking our permission. We have taken action to stop these transactions from occurring.’

This leaves a large number of performers on the very popular site with few or no suitable means of receiving payment for the services they render.

Pornhub already accepts the Verge cryptocurrency, as well as Tron, though the option is not yet widely used. Following the sudden news from PayPal — which forced those expecting payments to make alternative arrangements at short notice — the crypto community has rallied to suggest that there is a viable alternative to centralised payment processors who are prone to making this kind of unilateral decision.

Having integrated crypto payments 18 months back, this is a very natural move for the company. However, it will require changes — both in terms of the range and type of currencies offered, and the learning curve needed to store currencies safely and move them into the fiat world. This may not always be easy for those whose background is in another industry. As Tron’s Justin Sun tweeted, ‘.@Pornhub accepts $TRX payment. We need to add USDT-TRC20 supports too. #TRON #TRX’.

There’s clearly an opportunity here. While there are alternatives to PayPal for Pornhub’s performers, comparatively few customers are happy making bank transfers to them. The challenge here is a significant one: to make crypto as seamless to use as PayPal was, for regular people who just want to move money around easily.

It’s an issue the crypto sector needs to solve properly if it is ever to see meaningful real-world adoption. Here we have an active market with a large userbase, who now lack the means to pay each other. It’s a problem begging for a solution. Moreover, crypto offers benefits of privacy that both performers and customers might appreciate.

Surely, if the finest minds of the crypto sector unite behind Pornhub, they can solve this problem?

For the good of the industry, and the world.
