Supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne is using her platform to inspire others battling addiction. At the Met Gala this week, Delevingne opened up to Variety about her journey to sobriety, offering a message of hope: “You’re not alone.”
Breaking Her Silence: Delevingne first revealed her struggles with addiction in a powerful Vogue cover story back in April. She discussed entering rehab in 2022 and embracing a 12-step program.
Why Speak Out? “I owe it to people to talk about my struggles,” Delevingne told Variety. She believes open communication, especially about mental health issues, is crucial. “Being honest…it’s the least I can do,” she says.
A Downward Spiral and a Wake-Up Call: Vogue’s April issue offered a glimpse into Delevingne’s struggles. A disheveled photo at an airport sparked public concern, a stark reminder of her downward spiral. “I hadn’t slept. I was not okay,” she admitted.
Hitting Rock Bottom: Delevingne’s personal documentary, “Planet Sex,” coincided with the loss of her grandmother and a birthday she described as “a funeral for my previous life.” A wild party in Ibiza and a reckless trip to Burning Man followed, marked by injuries and “unknown substances.
Finding Support and Hope: Delevingne finally reached out for help in September 2022. I needed support,” she says. Reuniting with old friends became a turning point. “They looked at me and said, ‘You deserve a chance to have joy.'”
The Journey Continues: Now four months sober, Delevingne acknowledges the challenges ahead. “This process has its ups and downs,” she says. Her message is one of perseverance: “It’s not as simple as that. It doesn’t happen overnight.”
Cara Delevingne’s bravery in sharing her story is inspiring. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, remember – you’re not alone. Help is available.
