Former President Donald Trump said he would “love to debate” Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, after skipping the first Republican presidential debate.
Trump made the comments during an interview with “The Hugh Hewitt Show” on Wednesday. He said he was “not interested” in debating the other Republican candidates, but would be happy to go head-to-head with Markle.
“I didn’t like the way she dealt with the Queen,” Trump said of Markle. “I became very friendly with the Queen. She was an incredible woman at 95. She was so sharp. She was a hundred percent. When you watch Biden, you say, this is a different planet. But they treated her with great disrespect and I didn’t like it.”
Trump has been a critic of Markle in the past. In 2019, he called her a “nasty” woman. However, he later clarified his remarks and said he was not referring to her personally, but to her comments about him.
It is unclear if Markle would be interested in debating Trump. However, the possibility of such a debate has drawn attention to the former president’s ongoing legal troubles.
Last month, Trump turned himself in at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia to be booked on felony charges in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has accused Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, of “election interference” for charging him.
Willis has asked a judge to take steps to protect jurors who indicted Trump and over a dozen of his allies for their alleged attempts to flip Georgia’s election results in 2020.
The debate over whether or not to debate Markle is just the latest distraction for Trump as he faces mounting legal challenges. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to focus on the 2024 presidential election if he is unable to put his legal troubles behind him.
