Coronel Aispuro, a former beauty queen and dual U.S.-Mexico citizen, was sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021 after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering charges. She is currently being held at Long Beach Residential Reentry Management in California, a low-security confinement institution.
Coronel Aispuro’s release comes just days after her husband, “El Chapo,” wrote a letter to the federal judge who oversaw his case, asking for her and their young daughters to visit him at the supermax prison where he is currently serving a life sentence.
“I ask that you allow my wife and daughters to visit me,” the drug lord wrote in the letter, which was obtained by CBS News. “I miss them very much and they miss me too.”
It is unclear whether the judge will grant “El Chapo’s” request. However, Coronel Aispuro’s release from prison will allow her to reunite with her daughters and begin to rebuild her life.
Coronel Aispuro was arrested in February 2021 at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. She was accused of helping her husband run his drug trafficking empire and of conspiring to smuggle drugs into the United States.
She pleaded guilty to the charges in November 2021 and was sentenced to three years in prison. She was also ordered to forfeit $1.5 million and to pay a $100,000 fine.
Coronel Aispuro’s release from prison comes at a time when the Mexican government is under pressure to crack down on drug trafficking. The government has recently extradited several high-level drug traffickers to the United States, and it is likely that Coronel Aispuro’s release will be seen as a test of the government’s commitment to fighting drug trafficking.
It is unclear what Coronel Aispuro will do after her release from prison. However, it is likely that she will face intense media scrutiny and that her movements will be closely monitored by law enforcement.
