Remember the epic post-apocalyptic action flick “Mad Max: Fury Road”? Well, get ready to revisit the drama behind the scenes, because director George Miller is spilling the tea on the infamous feud between co-stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy!
As Miller gears up for the release of his new “Fury Road” prequel, “Furiosa,” he opened up to The Telegraph about the clash between the two lead actors. Apparently, it all boiled down to their contrasting personalities.
Method vs. Discipline
“They were just two very different performers,” Miller explained. He went on to describe Hardy’s “brilliance” but also revealed the challenges: “Tom has a damage to him…and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer.” Ouch! Reports of Hardy’s tardiness seem to be confirmed here.
Meanwhile, Theron was the picture of professionalism. “Charlize was incredibly disciplined,” Miller said, crediting her dance background for her “precision” on set. “She was always the first one there.”
Turning the Feud into Art (…Maybe?)
Miller, ever the optimist, tried to find a silver lining. “I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters,” he said, referencing the film’s need for cooperation and survival. But he also acknowledged the toll it took: “There’s no excuse for it…disruption that could be avoided.”
Taking Responsibility
Both Theron and Hardy have previously addressed the feud, blaming the film’s intense production and lack of trust for the tension. In the “Fury Road” oral history book, Theron even said it was “horrible” and they “should not have done that.”
The Infamous Late Arrival
The book also details a specific incident that ignited the flames. Apparently, Theron arrived at the set right on time, ready to film in the “War Rig” vehicle. However, Hardy was notoriously late, showing up three hours behind schedule!
Theron Erupts!
Sources say Theron, understandably frustrated by the disrespect, unleashed a verbal tirade on Hardy when he finally arrived. This incident reportedly led to Theron requesting a producer be present on set to mediate future conflicts.
Lessons Learned for Furiosa
Looking ahead to “Furiosa,” Miller seems determined to avoid a repeat. He revealed he spoke to his new stars, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, emphasizing “psychological safety” on set. “It’s not like the wild old days,” Miller concluded, making it clear he wants a more collaborative environment for his next post-apocalyptic adventure.
Will “Furiosa” be Fury-free? Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
