The Indiana State Medical Licensing Board has reprimanded an Indianapolis doctor who shared details with the news media about performed an abortion on a 10-year-old rape victim.
The board voted earlier this week to fine Dr. Caitlin Bernard $3,000, saying her sharing of the details violated privacy laws.
GOP Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita also accused Bernard of violating state law by not reporting the child’s abuse to the authorities, but the board rejected the charge, according to Fox News.
Rokita also requested that Bernard’s license be suspended, but the board also rejected the request.
Deputy Attorney General Cory Voight said that Bernard was not acting in the interest of the patient, but was pursuing a political agenda.
“There’s been no case like this before the board,” Voight told Fox News. “No physician has been as brazen in pursuit of their own agenda.”
Bernard has defended herself, stating that she did follow Indiana’s reporting requirements and her attorneys said that she did not release identifying information about the victim.
