Healthy airline competition in matters of sustainability and lowering CO2 emissions is a good thing. Nonetheless, collaboration and cooperation to achieve this endeavor make it better. Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced on October 8 that they had developed a joint report with a realistic title “Toward Virtually Zero CO2 Emissions from Air Transport in 2050.”

While many declarations call for ‘net-zero’, the marginally more pessimistic collaborative report between the two biggest carriers in Japan is saying ‘virtually zero’. This report is intended to, based on the airlines, expand awareness and also promote understanding of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Both of these airlines say that biofuels are anticipated to become the center of their shared goal of achieving carbon neutrality by the midpoint of the century. Yuji Hirako, ANA’s CEO and President shared this statement:

“We are in a situation where our generation needs to take immediate action toward the rapidly progressing climate change. Joining together with everyone involved in the aviation industry, we would like to pass on the blue skies to our children’s generation by steadily promoting SAF throughout the industry.”

ANA’s President now wants to continuously promote SAFs in the sector in the coming years.

Japanese Market Needs 2,300 Million kL

The report highlights things that are already known, including that SAFs can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel. It also insists on the sad fact that the current global production of SAF is less than 0.03% of jet fuel demand.

In the meantime, it also offers details that are particular to the Japanese market. According to the projected growth in the country’s aviation sector, the amount of SAF required to achieve zero emissions by 2050 for international and domestic flights by the Japanese airlines and the foreign airlines operating in Japan is a staggering 2,300 million kiloliters.

Based on data from IATA, in 2021, the global production of SAF will reach just 100 million liters. The efforts to increase production is growing significantly in some parts of the world. But, the process in Asia seems to be lagging behind that of Europe and the United States.

In the meantime, the SAF market in Asia is projected to reach $197 billion by 2050. That is due to the region’s expected growth in air travel, meaning that it will be 40% of the world’s SAF supply.

Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) are convinced that Japan might become a role model for the rest of Asia by creating local SAF production hubs.

Japan Needs To Inspire The Region

The growing support for SAF development has been noticeable from the Japanese government via the nation’s Green Innovation Fund. But, “Toward Virtually Zero CO2 Emissions from Air Transport in 2050” is calling for a major commitment to infrastructure investment from the state.

JAL and ANA say that Japan can become the role model for the rest of Asia in achieving the perfect local production of SAF. Yuji Akasacarriers’dent of Japan Airlines in the airlines’ joint statement issued on October 8 said:

“The role of airlines in connecting people and building bridges between countries will not change in the future. To sustain the future of aviation, the new energy of SAF and the cooperation of many people with a variety of knowledge are essential.”
