In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, West, 54, describes the whole ordeal as an “absurd situation.” He acknowledges the pain it caused, especially for his wife, Catherine FitzGerald, with whom he shares four children. “Obviously it was horrible for her,” he says.
But amidst the stress, West finds a silver lining: “There were lighter moments,” he reveals. Apparently, the constant media scrutiny forced him and Catherine to develop a sense of humor about it all.
Making Light of a Public Spectacle
“We joke about it sometimes,” West admits. He describes how the press would paint any public outing with Catherine as a “show of unity,” even if they were just having a normal disagreement. West says they now jokingly suggest going out for a staged “show of unity” just for fun.
From Scandal to Royalty
Believe it or not, the whole media firestorm actually helped West prepare for his role as Prince Charles on Netflix’s “The Crown.” He explains, “I’d already experienced that awful feeling of seeing your picture plastered everywhere in a negative light. There’s a moment of complete horror when something private becomes public. That feeling definitely helped me understand Charles.”
A Scooter, a Kiss, and a Mystery
For those who need a refresher, the drama all unfolded in 2020. West was photographed canoodling with James on a scooter in Rome. This was a major shock considering West’s decade-long marriage to Catherine.
