Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley, had a complicated relationship with Graceland, her father’s iconic mansion in Memphis, Tennessee. According to Nancy Rooks, a longtime Graceland maid, Lisa Marie rarely spent the night at Graceland after her father’s death in 1977.
Rooks shared her insights in her book “Inside Graceland: Elvis’ Maid Remembers,” in which she recalled that Lisa Marie would often stay with her cousin Patsy when she visited Graceland. Rooks believed that Lisa Marie’s reluctance to stay at Graceland was due to the emotional toll of being in the home where her father had died.
“After her father died, Lisa, when she would come back to Memphis, did not like spending the night at Graceland,” Rooks wrote. “She would usually end up spending the nights at her cousin Patsy’s house.”
Rooks also noted that Lisa Marie’s relationship with Graceland changed over time. As she got older, she became more comfortable spending time at the mansion and even took on a more active role in its upkeep.
“Lisa Marie’s relationship with Graceland evolved over the years,” Rooks said. “She became more comfortable spending time there as she got older, and she eventually took on a more active role in its preservation.”
Despite her initial reluctance to stay at Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley eventually came to cherish her father’s home. She remained a close custodian of Graceland until her death in 2023.
