Robert Card, the suspected gunman in the deadly mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, was found dead on Friday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Card’s body was located in the woods near Lisbon, Maine, about eight miles from Lewiston. He was found in an area near a recycling center where he previously worked.
Card had been on the run for two days after the shooting, which left at least 18 people dead and 13 injured.
Maine Gov. Janet Mills said that Card’s death is “entirely thanks to the hundreds of local, county, state and federal law enforcement members from all over and people from other states as well as people who searched tirelessly to arrive at this moment and behalf of all Maine people.“
Sen. Susan Collins also thanked law enforcement and health care workers for their work, and expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.
Card’s death marks the end of a two-day manhunt that had the entire state on edge. It is also the deadliest mass shooting in the United States this year.
