Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been friends for decades, but could they also be brothers?
McConaughey’s mom, Kay, dropped the bombshell during a family vacation in Greece.
“Oh, I knew your dad, Woody…” Kay said, according to McConaughey.
“What was the ellipsis about? And what was the knew about?'” the actor and his co-star asked.
“Just saying, we might have frequented the same similar place out in West Texas one time when he was on furlough,'” Kay said.
McConaughey and Harrelson are both from Texas, and the timeline matches up. It’s possible that Kay met Harrelson’s dad during a time when she was separated from McConaughey’s father.
The two actors are considering taking a DNA test to confirm the rumors, but McConaughey is hesitant.
“It’s a little easier for Wood to say, ‘Come on, let’s do it,’ because what’s the skin in it for him?” he said. “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad may not be my dad of 53 years,’ and believe in it?”
“I got a little more skin in the game,” he added.
Whether or not they’re related, McConaughey and Harrelson have a special bond. They’ve starred in several films together, including EDtv, Surfer, Dude, and True Detective.
“Where I start and where he ends and where he starts and I end has always been a murky line, and that’s part of our bromance, right?” McConaughey said. “My kids call him Uncle Woody, his kids call me Uncle Matthew.”
The potential brotherhood between McConaughey and Harrelson is a wild story, and it’s one that fans will be following closely.
