Powerful US Senator Charged with Bribery Over Relationship with New Jersey Businessmen

US Senator Bob Menendez and his wife have been charged with bribery over their relationship with New Jersey businessmen. The indictment alleges that Menendez used his power and influence as a senator to seek to protect and enrich the businessmen in exchange for thousands of dollars in bribes.

The charges could have a significant impact on Democrats’ efforts to keep their slim majority in the Senate next year. Menendez is the chair of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and he has been an important ally to President Biden on foreign policy issues.

The indictment contains evidence of a wide range of bribes, including cash, gold bars, a job with minimal requirements, and a luxury vehicle. Prosecutors also allege that Menendez used his official position to pressure the US Department of Agriculture to allow one of the businessmen to keep his monopoly on the export of halal food from the United States to Egypt.

Menendez has denied the charges and said he plans to seek re-election next year. However, the investigation could complicate Democrats’ efforts to hold onto their majority in the Senate.

The indictment is the third time Menendez has been investigated by federal prosecutors. He has never been convicted.
