The 10,000 “pizza day” bitcoin spent on travel

The first purchase in bitcoin was the famous pizza paid 10,000 BTC by Laszlo Hanyecz.

It was 22 May, 2010, those 10,000 bitcoin were worth $30 and today they would be worth about $400 million.

But this Jeremy Sturdivant could not have known and in fact he “spent” his bitcoin on travel.

Jeremy Sturdivant is the man from whom Laszlo Hanyecz bought the two pizzas that are destined to go down in Bitcoin history.

His story was picked up by the Sun. It all started with an ad on Bitcointalk in which Laszlo Hanyecz offered 10,000 bitcoin for two pizzas.

Sturdivant responded to that ad, delivered the pizzas, took that 10,000 BTC and then spent it to cover the cost of travelling to the US with his girlfriend.

He later told the Telegraph:

“If I had treated it as an investment, I might have held on a bit longer”.

At the time, Sturdivant’s only concern was how to deliver the pizzas from California, where he was, to Florida, where they were destined. Eventually he ordered them and had them delivered, and in return he got the famous 10,000 BTC that would make him a fortune. With the same amount of coins, he could now buy endless real estate.

On himself, he added:

“While I can’t claim any responsibility for Bitcoin’s success, I’m proud to have played a part in something that went”.

10,000 bitcoin for pizza: “I don’t regret it”

Laszlo Hanyecz isn’t unhappy about spending 10,000 bitcoin for a couple of pizzas either:

“I don’t regret it. I think that it’s great that I got to be part of the early history of Bitcoin in that way”.

Laszlo Hanyecz was in fact one of the pioneers of Bitcoin, he mined it and was simply trading his bitcoin to get a “free” dinner.

That purchase made history, and although he takes credit for it, he hinted to Cointelegraph that something like that had to happen anyway:

“I’d like to think that what I did helped. But I think if it wasn’t me, somebody else would have come along. And maybe it wouldn’t have been pizza”.
