TIL only 4 cryptos have lasted from December 2013 to today

We can see this by going to the middle of December 2013 on the archives at

https://coinmarketcap.com/historical/20131215/

As far as I can tell, the only cryptos that have stood the test of time are Bitcoin, Litecoin, XRP, and Dogecoin.

To make the title of this thread work I define “lasted” as still being in the top 450 today, though there are a few coins which are not far out from that. Feedback welcome in case I missed something or some coin has changed names and so escaped my attention.

  1. When reading this I was shouting out in my mind “What about PPC?” until I saw your proviso on the coin being in the top 450. So I went to CMC to check the rank and price. I was shocked to see that PPC is still alive and actually close to $1. I have a shit ton of them in archive so I am busy upgrading my wallet to the latest version. Enough to buy a large chunk of Btc!!!

Thanks for that. One of my collection of shitcoins brought back from the dead to be used for something proper thanks to this post!

  2. Definitely something to remember. I see a lot of people saying they’re just buying and gonna hold for 5 years, but keep in mind most cryptos from 5+ years ago are either dead or on life support.

  3. Interesting. I still have some Peercoin (first proof-of-stake coin I think). I also remember mining Primecoin on my laptop, trading Feathercoin on BTC-e, and hearing Max Keiser pumping Quark.

  4. One thing I find notable about the coins that have survived is that they seemed hardly the most innovative technologically and nor did they seem particularly strong on “use cases”. Three of the four literally had “being a currency” as their use case, though Bitcoin has since pivoted somewhat to “being a store of value”.

I wonder how many of today’s coins will still be around in 2029?

  5. I think we’ll see more coins survive going forward since the space has progressed and most projects (in the top 100 at least) have solid dev teams, partners, backing, etc. But we’ll definitely still see this to an extent, lots of 17/18 coins didn’t make it and are basically dead now.

  6. This is truly mind boggling. People (during the bull run) always look at year before that to see what the % of growth of a selected alt coin is. But they fail to see how many top 10 coins have vanished from existence.

  7. To be fair, there were only 52 coins on the chart compared to thousands today. I’d be interested to know survival by percentage compared to 2017. 2013 has a 7.6% survival rate
