  1. I’ve been seeing this around. It seems accurate as far as it goes but ultimately a shallow read, ignoring how much mining is already done with excess renewable energy because that’s the cheapest energy on offer. Also electricity already has mechanisms for compensating for their carbon footprint by buying carbon credits. Or just raising electricity rates for miners.

The environmental costs of manufacturing mining rigs is an issue, but I’m not sure it stands out amid the masses of crap humanity spews out every day of the year. It’s an issue like the mountains of fake dog crap, singing billy basses, and the millions upon millions of other shitty items produced every year.

I suspect that the article struck a chord because a lot of people are eager for any bat to hit Bitcoin with because crypto bros are just the *fucking worst* wherever they appear (their words) and people associate anything crypto with those doucheclowns. (their words).

  2. This argument is such a weird one in my opinion.

“*Bitcoin mining is harmful for the environment!*”

Yes, that’s correct in a way. You know what else is harmful for the environment? Actual fucking mining. But noone seems to be complaining about that.

  3. I like seeing how crypto gets reported on in mainstream papers/websites here in the UK. This featured a *lot* of negativity, but I was genuinely surprised at the exposure for other crypto… MSM seems to only ever mention BTC

  4. The article is a little negative. Writers want an angle, huh!

That said, it is a ligitimate criticism of Bitcoin (and other PoW currencies) that they’re not energy efficient. A lot of people on this sub won’t admit it, but a lot of coal being burned to make us rich. There is also a surprising amount of renewable electricity involved (estimates from 39% to as high as 76% from non-polluting sources) but we should still try and make it better. ETH2.0 and Cardano are improvements, and it’s good to talk about them.
