White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked on Tuesday if former First Lady Melania Trump was invited to fly with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to the funeral of late First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
Jean-Pierre said that Melania Trump was not on the flight to Georgia for the funeral. She also said that she could not speak to any private conversations that the First Ladies may have had with each other.
The comments come as the Bidens and Trumps have been increasingly at odds. In recent months, President Biden has criticized former President Donald Trump over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his role in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Melania Trump has also been critical of the Bidens. In October, she gave a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in which she accused the Bidens of being “divisive” and “radical.”
The tension between the Bidens and Trumps is likely to continue in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election. Both President Biden and former President Trump have hinted that they may run for president again.
If they do, the 2024 election is likely to be one of the most contentious in recent history.
