Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist and Infowars host who has been ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion in judgments to Sandy Hook families for calling the 2012 school shooting a hoax, is facing new scrutiny for his personal spending.
According to court records, Jones spent $93,000 in July on personal expenses, including $15,000 to his wife, Erika Wulff Jones, $7,900 on housekeeping, $6,300 on meals and entertainment, and $3,400 on groceries. He also spent $6,700 on his Texas lake house and $5,600 on his vehicles and boats.
Lawyers for the Sandy Hook families say that Jones’ spending is excessive and that he should be required to reduce it so that he can pay off the judgments against him.
“It is disturbing that Alex Jones continues to spend money on excessive household expenditures and his extravagant lifestyle when that money rightfully belongs to the families he spent years tormenting,” said Christopher Mattei, a Connecticut lawyer for the families.
Jones has denied any wrongdoing, saying that he is simply living a modest lifestyle.
“If anything, I like to go to nice restaurants. That is my deal. I like to go on a couple of nice vacations a year, but I think I pretty much have earned that in this fight,” he said on his Infowars show Tuesday.
However, financial documents filed by Jones and his bankruptcy lawyers show that he has a net worth of around $14 million and that his company, Free Speech Systems, continues to rake in cash from the sale of nutritional supplements, survival supplies, and other merchandise.
The Sandy Hook families have another pending lawsuit claiming that Jones hid millions of dollars in an attempt to protect his wealth. Jones’ lawyers have denied the allegations.
Jones is currently appealing the $1.5 billion in lawsuit awards against him.
