The charges could have a significant impact on Democrats’ efforts to keep their slim majority in the Senate next year. Menendez is the chair of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and he has been an important ally to President Biden on foreign policy issues.

The indictment contains evidence of a wide range of bribes, including cash, gold bars, a job with minimal requirements, and a luxury vehicle. Prosecutors also allege that Menendez used his official position to pressure the US Department of Agriculture to allow one of the businessmen to keep his monopoly on the export of halal food from the United States to Egypt.
